I used to suffer from terrible stomach aches and cramps. Terrible is an understatement–the pain was similar to when I’d eat dairy in my pre-vegan days. I suffered from tummy troubles for years because I am lactose-intolerant. I never made the connection that dairy foods were the culprit, and surprisingly, neither did any of the doctors I visited.
Going vegan didn’t exactly eliminate my excruciating stomach cramps. As a newbie vegan, I ate an irresponsible amount of fried and processed food, all riddled with oil. Unbeknown to me, fatty foods were causing my stomach pains.
The high carb low fat lifestyle has been the only solution for me. I never have debilitating stomach aches when my diet is clean. Anytime I splurge on a fatty meal, I expect to suffer the consequences. Because of that, I’m indulging in treats less and less.
If you are new to the HCLF lifestyle (welcome!!), bear in mind that it will take time for your digestive system to adjust to all this fiber. Don’t panic! You will get used to it, I swear.
In the beginning, you may feel bloated after eating lots of fruits and veggies. Hopefully, you can find some relief with these tips:
Make sure you are hydrated. Try drinking a liter of water at least 30 minutes before your meal. If you are dehydrated, you will suffer from stomach cramps as your body tries to digest all that fiber.
Eat fruit before cooked veggies because fruit digests faster than cooked veggies. When I did eat fruit (like grapes) after my steamed veggie dinner, my body would try to quickly digest the grapes while still working on digesting the veggies, and my stomach would act up. Now I eat fruit all day long and then have a large steamed veggie meal for dinner. If I’m still hungry after dinner, I’ll eat more steamed veggies.
Try simplifying your meals.You might be eating too many different types of fruits or veggies in one sitting. You can’t go wrong with a monomeal, where you eat one type of fruit until you are full.
